ABOUT KIM NISHIDA

120_kg13758Trained as a business coach, I set up shop for myself in 2003 and have been self-employed ever since. Not that the road has always been a smooth one.

First of all, I insisted on tackling all the technology issues involved in growing a business via the internet myself. This meant learning how to build my own websites from scratch, creating ezines, ebooks, editing graphics, writing sales copy, conducting teleclasses, blogging, recording and editing audio, shooting and editing screen capture videos…you name it. All in the name of reaching out to and helping more people via my coaching business.

Then suddenly my business hit a plateau. I had a full roster of clients and worked awfully hard but still felt like I wasn’t bringing in enough income compared to the number of hours I spent both with clients and doing all of my marketing. I networked at Chamber of Commerce mixers and leads groups, did tons of article marketing, and worked with my clients both one-to-one and in groups. And honestly, at the end of the week I was exhausted. This was worse than when I worked 9 to 5! Something seemed very wrong.

The following year, I hit another major roadblock. I went from a 90% close rate, meaning 9 out of 10 people I spoke to about coaching hired me on the spot, to a zero % close rate. And the newest clients were nightmares…huge energy drainers, antagonistic, and resistant. We were definitely not a good match.

When I realized I was attracting the wrong clients (or no clients at all), I knew I had to make some serious changes. This was not the business that I wanted.

Inspired by a coaching colleague, I began doing “odd jobs” for coaches who had technology issues. Everything I had done for myself, I could now do for them. Within 3 months I had another full roster of clients, most of whom were coaches, who needed help from someone who understood how to market a coaching business as well as how to take care of the technology issues.

From there I absolutely fell in love with internet marketing. I already had a background in marketing and publicity from my years working in book publishing, but now I began studying and learning from some of the internet marketing masters like Alex Mandossian, Armand Morin, Dan Kennedy, and Jim Edwards as well as those who taught marketing geared specifically for coaches such as Adam Urbanski and Christian Mickelsen.

But when I learned about how to build and sell membership sites from Ryan Deiss, I was hooked. This was the missing piece! Growing a business via a membership program was such a clear match for coaches who definitely want to make a difference in the world by helping as many people as possible without working themselves to death.

I knew from experience that, for most entrepreneurs, the 1-1 model wasn’t going to cut it and that only by building a membership could a coach get to work with more people without getting burned out.

I quickly set up my membership site, working with small business owners. I also began building membership sites for other coaches and loved seeing the results they had. And with the rise of social networks, I began exploring more creative and less traditional ways of growing a community such as using Facebook, Twitter, and Ning.

Today I spend most of my time doing what I love most…teaching. I train groups and individuals to design their community in a way that serves them and their members the best. My passion lies around breaking down both marketing and technology so that it’s user friendly and easily managed by even the most tech-resistant business owner.

It’s my mission to train 10,000 entrepreneurs to build and connect with their own community of 100+ members by 2011. That means touching the lives of 1 million people via membership sites and online communities!

When I’m not speaking or teaching about profitable communities, I’m working hands on for a select few clients, running at the beach, eating sushi, walking the dogs, or hanging out with my friends and family in Southern California.
